"etymology_text": "First appeared in the form of colloquial clippings of some proper names, such as Mari (<María) or Rodri (<Rodrigo), and some nouns and adjectives, e.g. boli (<bolígrafo (“ballpoint pen”)), bici (<bicicleta (“bicycle”)); which afterwards influenced the ending of other words (including interjections) after a vowel other than i, used to convey affection: gordi (“honey, darling”) (<gordo (“fat”)), tonti (“silly”) (<tonto (“stupid”)), holi (“hi”) (<hola (“hello”)). Probably also influenced by clippings of the diminutive-forming suffixes -ito and -illo. The addition of -s seems to be a later development, see -is.\nCompare with English -ie, which has a similar usage. The vowel /i/ has an onomatopoeic quality to it, which may reinforce its occurrence in diminutives.",
