Etymology: From cocon + -ă. This feminine form can be found in various languages of the southern Balkans (cf. Greek κοκόνα (kokóna), κοκονίτσα (kokonítsa), Turkish kokona, Bulgarian кокона (kokona), etc.), probably borrowed from the Aromanian equivalent cuconã or Megleno-Romanian cucoană. It was an older term that often referred to Greek women of good, highborn families.
