Etymology: From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sants, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁sónts. Baltic cognate is Lithuanian sañt (transgr.). Indo-European cognates are Sanskrit सत् (sat), सत्य (satya), Ancient Greek ὤν (ṓn), Latin praesēns, absēns, sōns, sonticus, Proto-Germanic *sanþaz, *sunjaz. According to Vasmer, Ukrainian су́тий (sútyj) may be derived from consonant stem (*sǫtь). Compare *mogǫt-, *slovǫtь, *žьmǫtь.
