In the unexpected survival of intervocalic /n/ (let alone twice), some or even all of the following factors may have been involved:\n* Partial degree of blending or compromise with the literary Latin form venēnum.\n* A rejection of the expected *v(ẽ)inho due to impending homophony with vinho (“wine”).\n* Influence from neighbouring Ibero-Romance varieties that regularly retain /-n-/; cf. especially the Old Spanish variant vinino.\nIts modern counterparts, Galician veleno and Portuguese veneno, appear to have been borrowed anew from Latin.",
