Verb

IPA: /ˈleɪ̯vən/, [ˈlɜɪ̯vən]
Etymology: Probably from German lieben with adaptation to the underlying adjective léif (“dear”). In neighbouring Central Franconian, and in fact most German dialects, the verb is absent from the general vocabulary and only exists in certain phrases based on the standard language. The German verb is from Middle High German lieben (“to make dear, to treat in a friendly way”), from Old High German liubēn. See the lemma for more.
