Etymology: An old, pre-13th-century borrowing from Old East Slavic забогъ (zabogŭ); cf. Russian сапо́г (sapóg), dialectal забог (zabog), already mentioned in 17th-century dictionaries, and also in 15th- and 16th-century family names. An old feminine variant zābaka, already attested in 17th-century dictionaries, persisted until the 19th century, when it finally disappeared.
