"strādnieks" meaning in Latvian

Noun

Etymology: Probably from strād(āt) (“to work”) + -nieks. It is also possible that it was derived from an older (and still dialectally attested) noun strāda (“harvest time”), probably a borrowing from Russian dialectal страда (strada, “time of heavy (farm) work; heavy (farm) work”). Originally the meaning of strādnieks was “one who works well, hard,” and referred mostly to farm work. The current meaning “worker (in general)” started in the mid-19th century, especially in writings published in the newspaper “Peterburgas Avīze.” Etymology templates: {{suffix|lv|strādāt|nieks|alt1=strād(āt)|gloss1=to work}} strād(āt) (“to work”) + -nieks, {{cog|ru|-}} Russian Head templates: {{head|lv|noun|g=m|g2=|head=|sort=}} strādnieks m, {{lv-noun|m|1st|fem=strādniece}} strādnieks m (1st declension, feminine form: strādniece) Inflection templates: {{lv-decl-noun|strādniek|s|1st|extrawidth=-60}}, {{lv-decl-noun-1|strādniek|s|4=|5=|6=|7=|8=|drop-v=|keep-s=|x=-60}}, {{lv-decl-noun-table|strādnieks|strādnieki|strādnieku|strādniekus|strādnieka|strādnieku|strādniekam|strādniekiem|strādnieku|strādniekiem|strādniekā|strādniekos|strādniek|strādnieki|type=1st declension|x=-60}} Forms: strādniece [feminine], declension-1 [table-tags], strādnieks [nominative, singular], strādnieki [nominative, plural], strādnieku [accusative, singular], strādniekus [accusative, plural], strādnieka [genitive, singular], strādnieku [genitive, plural], strādniekam [dative, singular], strādniekiem [dative, plural], strādnieku [instrumental, singular], strādniekiem [instrumental, plural], strādniekā [locative, singular], strādniekos [locative, plural], strādniek [singular, vocative], strādnieki [plural, vocative]
