Noun

IPA: [apinis], [apīːnis] Audio: lv-riga-apinis.ogg
Etymology: From the same source as the verb vīt (“to wind, to wreathe”) (q.v.), with an extra prefix ap- and suffix -ni̯o, leading to *apvīnis > apīnis, apinis (the disappearance of v after p is sporadically attested elsewhere; cf. apaļš < *apval-); the original meaning was probably “woven one.” The variant with a short i probably resulted from the influence of words containing the suffix -enis, -inis (e.g., putenis, dialectal putinis). Cognates include Lithuanian apynỹs, dialectal apvynỹs.
