Noun

IPA: [ˈaŋ.kɔ.ra] [Classical-Latin], [ˈaŋ.ko.ra] (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical)
Etymology: This word is either cognate with or, more likely, borrowed from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓́γκῡρᾰ (ắnkūră). A derivation from *h₂enk- (“corner, hirn”), whence also Ancient Greek ἄγκος (ánkos), is supported by the OED. (with the presumed reconstruction being *h₂enk-ur-ya-) but is challenged by Beekes, taking the word as Pre-Greek due to the suffix -ῡρα (-ūra) (usually associated with Pre-Greek substrate words. Compare γέφῡρᾰ (géphūră, “dam, dike”) and γόργῡρα (górgūra, “underground sewer”)) being present. Compare γέφῡρᾰ (géphūră, “dam, dike”) and γόργῡρα (górgūra, “underground sewer”)) being present.",
