Noun

IPA: [pjʌ̹ɾa̠ŋ] [SK-Standard, Seoul] Forms: byeorang [romanization]
Etymology: In its modern form, first attested in the Hanbul jajeon (韓佛字典 / 한불자전), 1880, as Early Modern Korean 벼랑. Ancestral Middle Korean form *벼ᄅᆞ〮 (*pyèló) is first attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 쇠〮ᄫᅧᄅᆞ〮 (Yale: SwóyWyèló), a toponym. Alternatively, also attested in the Akhak gwebeom (樂學軌範 / 악학궤범), 1493, as Middle Korean 볋 (Yale: pyelh). These two forms demonstrate that the pre-15c. form was probably *pyolok, though this is uncertain. Further, the Early Modern Korean form above—and by extension this modern form—can be understood as being equivalent to either 벼ᄅᆞ〮 (pyèló) + 아ᇰ (-ang) or 볋 (pyelh) + 아ᇰ (-ang). Unfortunately, the sparse attestation of these forms makes it difficult to ascertain when this derivation happened. Compare Middle Korean 비레 (piley), 비러 (pile), 비례 (pilyey) with the same meaning. Possibly cognate with Manchu ᠪᡳᠶᠣᡵᠠᠨ (biyoran), which is proposed to be a loan from Old Korean. See the entry for more information.
