"жолбарыс" meaning in Kazakh

See жолбарыс in All languages combined, or Wiktionary

Noun

IPA: [ʒolbɑˈɾɯs]
Etymology: From Proto-Turkic *bars, related to Proto-Mongolic *bars. Cognate with Turkish pars, Old Turkic jolbars ("tiger"). The component jol is interpreted differently by researchers. V.V. Radlov, A.M. Shcherbak, and G. Clauson suggest that jolbars arose from albars due to paronymic convergence with jol (road, strip). W. Bang also suggests that jolbars could have been syncopated from jolabars, which were named for their variegated skins. The oldest recorded meaning of jolbars is tiger rather than leopard. However, the absence of a long vowel in the Turkic lit. jolbars obscures its semantic derivation.
