The initial G- arose from a reinterpretation of the sound /j/ as the lenited form of /ɟ/. Early Modern Irish and Classical Gaelic have spellings in -dh-, which is retained in Scottish Gaelic Iùdhach; the unlenited -d- of the modern language has been restored on the basis of the Latin word as well as English words like Judaism and Judaic.",
