Verb

IPA: /bɪn/ Audio: De-bin.ogg , De-bin2.ogg , LL-Q188 (deu)-Sebastian Wallroth-bin.wav
Etymology: From Middle High German, from Old High German bim (“am”), from Proto-Germanic *biumi (first-person singular present active indicative of Proto-Germanic *beuną (“to be”)), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰew- (“to be, become, appear”). Cognate with Dutch ben (“am”), Old English bēom (“am”). More at be. German bin and Dutch ben have two sources: * a form based on Proto-Indo-European *h₁ésmi (“am”) like English am, Old Norse em * an initial b- that was added to the word under influence of verb forms based on Proto-Germanic *beuną (as in Old English beon) Etymology templates: {{der|de|gmh|-}} Middle High German, {{der|de|goh|bim||am}} Old High German bim (“am”), {{der|de|gem-pro|*biumi}} Proto-Germanic *biumi, {{der|de|gem-pro|*beuną||to be}} Proto-Germanic *beuną (“to be”), {{der|de|ine-pro|*bʰew-||to be, become, appear}} Proto-Indo-European *bʰew- (“to be, become, appear”), {{cog|nl|ben||am}} Dutch ben (“am”), {{cog|ang|bēom||am}} Old English bēom (“am”), {{der|de|ine-pro|*h₁ésmi||am}} Proto-Indo-European *h₁ésmi (“am”), {{cog|en|am}} English am Head templates: {{head|de|verb form}} bin
