"Sprosse" meaning in German

See Sprosse in All languages combined, or Wiktionary

Noun

IPA: /ˈʃpʁɔsə/ Audio: De-Sprosse2.ogg [Germany, Berlin], De-Sprosse.ogg
Etymology: From Middle High German sprozze m, from Old High German sprozzo (“rung”), from Proto-Germanic *sprutô, from the root of *spreutaną, whence sprießen. Cognate with Dutch sport (“rung”), Middle Low German sprōte (“rung, sprout”), Old English sprot(a) (“sprout”). The sense “sprout” seems to be original, but is not attested in High German before the 15th century. Doublet of Spross, which compare. The sense “freckle” (17th c., at first also in the form sprusse) is a semantic loan from Middle Low German sprûte (literally “sprout”), an ablaut variant of the above noun. Cognate with Dutch spruit (“sprout”) and sproet (“freckle”), English sprout. Cognate with Dutch sport (“rung”), Middle Low German sprōte (“rung, sprout”), Old English sprot(a) (“sprout”). The sense “sprout” seems to be original, but is not attested in High German before the 15th century. Doublet of Spross, which compare.\nThe sense “freckle” (17th c., at first also in the form sprusse) is a semantic loan from Middle Low German sprûte (literally “sprout”), an ablaut variant of the above noun.
