Etymology: From Ripuarian and Low Franconian Schrott (“scrap”), which is the same word as German Schrot (“groats”). The regional form is not, however, derived from Middle High German schrōt, but from a variant Middle High German schrāt, Middle Dutch *scraet (compare attested scrāden, an eastern variant of scrōden, whence modern Dutch schrooien).
