"Riesling" meaning in German

Noun

IPA: /ˈʁiːslɪŋ/ Audio: De-Riesling.ogg
Etymology: Uncertain. Possibly from a Middle High German variant of rueszling, perhaps ruoz (“soot”), from Old High German hruoz, from Proto-Germanic *hrōtaz (“soot”) + the suffix -ling. The semantic connection with soot would be referring to the grapes' tendency to develop black spots when ripe. There are several written references to the variety of grape dating from the 15th century.
