Noun

IPA: /abedi/ Audio: Ka-აბედი.ogg Forms: abedi [romanization], აბედები [plural]
Etymology: Klimov 1964 on the basis of აბედი (abedi), Mingrelian ობედი (obedi), Svan ჰაბედ (habed), ჰობედ (hobed), აბედ (abed) reconstructed Proto-Kartvelian *abed- (“tinder”), however the reconstruction is discarded in later works. Related to Old Armenian աբեթ (abetʻ) and Middle Armenian աբեդ (abed). The direction of borrowing is uncertain. Marr considers the Armenian to be borrowed from Georgian, deriving the Kartvelian forms from a root meaning “to burn”; *bdw- (“to burn”), whence Svan ლი-ბიდ (li-bid), მჷ-ბიდ (mə-bid, “combustible”), ლი-ბდინ-ე (li-bdin-e, “to set on fire”). J̌ahukyan accepts the Georgian borrowing of Armenian. Ačaṙyan is skeptical and allows for the possibility that the borrowing was actually in the opposite direction, from Armenian into Kartvelian, but he does not give an etymology for the Armenian word.
