Noun

IPA: /dɔl.mɛn/ Audio: LL-Q150 (fra)-Poslovitch-dolmen.wav [France, Vosges], LL-Q150 (fra)-DSwissK-dolmen.wav [Switzerland, Valais] Forms: dolmens [plural]
Etymology: First attested as dolmin in 1796. One theory states that it is incorrectly fabricated from Breton taol (“table”) + maen (“stone”) (the correct compound would be *taolvaen, not **daolmaen). An alternative theory states the term derives from Cornish tolmen instead, also a compound of toll (“hole”) + men (“stone”); compare the name of the Cornish standing stones Men an Toll.
