Noun

IPA: /ħu.baː.ħib/
Etymology: Name of a proverbial Bedouin in pre-Islamic times أَبُو حُبَاحِب (ʔabū ḥubāḥib) who due to his avarice (بُخْل (buḵl)) would extinguish his parsimonious fire when somebody saw it. Then أَبُو الْحُبَاحِب (ʔabū l-ḥubāḥib), نَار أَبِي حُبَاحِب (nār ʔabī ḥubāḥib) and نَار الْحُبَاحِب (nār al-ḥubāḥib) supposedly designated any elusive fire, such as sparks produced by galloping horses with their hooves (Qurʔān 100:2). Surely that kunya was formed secondarily by folk imagination and “spark” is an original formation from the root’s meanings of ephemeral hunches of nature.
