Noun

IPA: /e.ry.sǐː.bɛː/, /e.ryˈsi.βi/, /e.riˈsi.vi/, /e.ry.sǐː.bɛː/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /e.ryˈsi.be̝/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /e.ryˈsi.βi/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /e.ryˈsi.vi/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /e.riˈsi.vi/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: The stem of this word is also found in ἐρύσιμον (erúsimon, “hedge-mustard”) and ἐρυσίπελας (erusípelas, “erysipelas”). Traditionally considered an old s-enlargement of ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, “red”), which can be found in Latin russus (“red, reddish-brown”) and Lithuanian raūsvas (“red”). However, Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin, because of the alternation of σ/θ and the typical long -ῑ-: this hypothesis is supported also by Beekes.
