Verb [Proto-Slavic]

Etymology: From not independently attested *strybъ (but cf. Ukrainian Стриб (Stryb, hydronym), Russian стрыбый (strybyj, “rapid, quick”) matching Lithuanian sraujùs (“rapid”) et al.) from *stry-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *srū-, from Proto-Indo-European *srew- (“to flow, stream”) + *-ati. Original meaning was “to flow, run”. The modern meanings of Ukrainian стрибати (strybaty, “to jump”) is late and can be explained by figurative meaning “to flow quickly over a stone; run chaotically” which suggests a shift in meaning from horizontal to vertical movement. Cf. also Latvian diet (“to run, dance, jump”), Sanskrit प्रवते (pravate, “to undulate, jump”).
