Noun [Romanian]

IPA: /ˈsku.tek/ Audio: LL-Q7913 (ron)-Filosoful-scutec.wav
Etymology: Unknown. Possibly from Slavic *skutъ, or from Vulgar Latin *scuticum, from Latin scutica (“a leather lash, whip”) (itself borrowed from Ancient Greek σκύτος (skútos)), and probably confused with derivatives of cutis (“leather”) (compare cutica). Therefore, the meaning could have changed from a leather belt to that of fabric or cloth in general. Cognate to Aromanian scutic. Cf. also Albanian skutë (“apron”), Greek σκουτί (skoutí).
