Noun [Romanian]

IPA: /ˈməɡurə/ [standard], /məˈɡurə/ [Transylvania]
Etymology: Uncertain. Compare Aromanian mãgulã~mãgurã, Albanian magulë, Greek μαγούλα (magoúla). Proposals include an expressive creation based on *măc- or *moc-, Latin macula (“stain”) or *magulum, and Proto-Slavic *mogyla. This word has also been associated with the pan-Mediterranean substrate which is allegedly reflected in Basque mokor (“lump of earth”) and Sardinian mogoro (“hill”).
