Noun [Proto-Celtic]

Etymology: From Proto-Indo-European *linom (“flax”) plus an unknown suffix, maybe Proto-Indo-European *-sneh₂ (“Used to form nouns denoting an object”) as one of the suffixes suggested by Matasović. The original Proto-Indo-European word doesn’t seem to be confined to a single form; Proto-Celtic, for example, has two versions, one with the long /i/ and another with its short counterpart. See Latin līnum, Proto-Germanic *līną for more information.
