Noun [Latvian]

Audio: lv-riga-lūsis.ogg
Etymology: From Proto-Balto-Slavic *lū́ˀśis, from Proto-Indo-European *lewḱ- (“lynx”), apparently a parallel form of *lewk- (“bright; to shine”) (whence Latvian lauks “field,” q.v.). The animal was probably named after its glowing eyes and sharp vision, or perhaps because of its whitish fur. Cognates include Lithuanian lū́šis, Old Prussian luysis (uy maybe [ū] or [uʲ]), Russian рысь (rysʹ), Czech rys, Polish ryś, Proto-Germanic *luhs(u)- (Old High German luhs, German Luchs), Ancient Greek λύγξ (lúnx), Old Armenian լուսանունք pl (lusanunkʻ) Etymology templates: {{inh|lv|ine-bsl-pro|*lū́ˀśis}} Proto-Balto-Slavic *lū́ˀśis, {{der|lv|ine-pro|*lewḱ-|t=lynx}} Proto-Indo-European *lewḱ- (“lynx”), {{cog|lv|lauks}} Latvian lauks, {{cog|lt|lū́šis}} Lithuanian lū́šis, {{cog|prg|luysis}} Old Prussian luysis, {{cog|ru|рысь}} Russian рысь (rysʹ), {{cog|cs|-}} Czech, {{cog|pl|ryś}} Polish ryś, {{cog|gem-pro|*luhs(u)-}} Proto-Germanic *luhs(u)-, {{cog|goh|luhs}} Old High German luhs, {{cog|de|Luchs}} German Luchs, {{cog|grc|λύγξ}} Ancient Greek λύγξ (lúnx), {{cog|xcl|լուսանունք|g=p}} Old Armenian լուսանունք pl (lusanunkʻ) Head templates: {{head|lv|noun|g=m|g2=|head=|sort=}} lūsis m, {{lv-noun|m|2nd}} lūsis m (2nd declension) Inflection templates: {{lv-decl-noun|lū|is|2nd||s|š|extrawidth=-60}}, {{lv-decl-noun-2|lū|is|4=|5=s|6=š|7=|8=|drop-v=|keep-s=|x=-60}}, {{lv-decl-noun-table|lūsis|lūši|lūsi|lūšus|lūša|lūšu|lūsim|lūšiem|lūsi|lūšiem|lūsī|lūšos|lūsi|lūši|type=2nd declension|x=-60}} Forms: declension-2 [table-tags], lūsis [nominative, singular], lūši [nominative, plural], lūsi [accusative, singular], lūšus [accusative, plural], lūša [genitive, singular], lūšu [genitive, plural], lūsim [dative, singular], lūšiem [dative, plural], lūsi [instrumental, singular], lūšiem [instrumental, plural], lūsī [locative, singular], lūšos [locative, plural], lūsi [singular, vocative], lūši [plural, vocative]
