Noun [Proto-Finnic]

Etymology: Traditionally considered to be from Pre-Proto-Finnic *šämä (akin to Proto-Samic *sāmē). More recently it has however been demonstrated that both Proto-Samic *sāmē and Proto-Finnic *soomi go back to a common proto-form *sämä, in which case *hämä may instead be borrowed from an early form of Proto-Samic *sāmē (which could have yielded *šämä).
