Adjective [Latin]

IPA: /ˈdap.si.lis/ [Classical-Latin], [ˈd̪äps̠ɪlʲɪs̠] [Classical-Latin], /ˈdap.si.lis/ (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical), [ˈd̪äpsilis] (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical)
Etymology: Possibly borrowed from Ancient Greek δαψιλής (dapsilḗs), built on the aorist stem of δάπτω (dáptō, “to devour, consume”). The Latin noun daps, dapis is clearly related, but it is difficult to derive the form dapsilis directly from this noun, since its stem is dap- (with -s- simply an inflectional ending of the nominative singular). Furthermore, the suffix -ilis with short -ĭ- most often forms deverbal rather than denominative adjectives.
