Noun [Romanian]

Audio: Ro-Romania-Albert-cumătru.ogg
Etymology: Possibly from a Common Slavic *kъmotrъ < Latin compater. However, the corresponding forms in other Slavic languages are different, such as Bulgarian, Croatian, Russian kum, Serbian kumak, which leads some linguists to propose that the Romanian word may have been derived analogically as a masculine from the related feminine form cumătră, and this possibly directly from Latin commāter, commātrem. Compare Spanish comadre, Italian comare, French commère.
