Noun [Romanian]

IPA: /ˈt͡ʃo̯aret͡ʃʲ/ Forms: no-table-tags [table-tags], cioareci [accusative, indefinite, nominative, plural], niște cioareci [accusative, indefinite, nominative, plural], cioarecii [accusative, definite, nominative, plural], cioareci [dative, genitive, indefinite, plural], unor cioareci [dative, genitive, indefinite, plural], cioarecilor [dative, definite, genitive, plural], cioarecilor [plural, vocative]
Etymology: Unknown, but cognate with Aromanian cioaric (“cloth”) and cioariți (“woolen socks”). Either borrowed from Ottoman Turkish چارق (çarık, “a kind of sandal”), whence also Greek τσαρούχι (tsaroúchi), or derived from Paleo-Balkan. If this latter indigenous origin is correct, then the term could be seen as a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (“to hide, conceal”), whence Latin cutis (“skin”).
