Noun [Old English]

IPA: /ˈkæp.pe/
Etymology: From Proto-West Germanic *kappā, from Late Latin cappa. Normally prehistoric *æ was retracted to *a when followed by a geminate and back vowel. Reason for failure of retraction in this word remains unknown. Failure of palatalization and palatal diphthongization is also unexpected. Possibly the word's status as a Latin borrowing shielded it from certain sound changes.
