Noun [Latin]

IPA: /ˈas.pe.ra arˈteː.ri.a/ [Classical], [ˈäs̠pɛrä ärˈt̪eːriä] [Classical], /ˈas.pe.ra arˈte.ri.a/ (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical), [ˈäsperä ärˈt̪ɛːriä] (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical)
Etymology: Sometimes contrasted with levis artēria, artēria levis, denoting just a “vein”, or bloodvessel, but Ancient Greek ἀρτηρῐ́ᾱ (artēríā) meant a windpipe already. It is a calque of Ancient Greek τραχεῖα ἀρτηρία (trakheîa artēría), hence also the order of the two words, asper meaning “rough, rugged” like τραχύς (trakhús).
