Originally located in the very west of the Slavic area, the region preserved its Polabian dialect even when large territories to its east had long been Germanised under the eastern colonisation. The name Wendland goes back to this period as a language island. The dialect finally died out in the mid-18th century, however, having been supplanted by Low German.",
