Noun [English]

Forms: Paulicians [plural]
Etymology: Borrowed from Byzantine Greek Παυλικιανός (Paulikianós), from Παῦλος (Paûlos) + -ικός (-ikós) + -ιανός (-ianós), originally most likely in reference to Paul the Apostle, who was held in special esteem by the group. Byzantine heresiologists conventionally traced the term to Paul of Samosata, however, and a link to a Paulician figure known as Paul the Armenian has also been proposed.
