Noun [Central Franconian]

IPA: /kʀøks/ Forms: Kröxer [plural], Kröxje [diminutive]
Etymology: From Middle High German kriuze, from Old High German krūzi, from Latin crux. The -x has nothing in particular to do with the Latin form, but is due to Ripuarian velarisation. Kröx or *Krüx would be expected also in central Ripuarian (cf. Colognian Düx), but has somehow failed to establish itself in these dialects.
