Etymology: Learned borrowing from Βάρδυλις (Bárdulis), Βάρδυλλις (Bárdullis), the name of an Illyrian king attested in Ancient Greek sources. The name is widely reinterpreted as bardhë + yll, literally “white star”, and although connection with bardhë (“white”) is indeed widely endorsed, similarity with yll (“star”) is most probably coincidental.
