Proper name [English]

IPA: /ˈbæfəmɛt/
Etymology: From Medieval Latin Baphometh, deriving from Occitan Bafometz. Ostensibly a corruption of Andalusian Arabic مَحُمَّدْ (“Maḥummad”), ultimately deriving from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad) (compare Old Catalan Mafumet and Old Galician-Portuguese Mafomat), which would make it a doublet of mammet and Muhammad. But other sources have been suggested.
