Noun [German]

Forms: der A-Prominente [definite, nominative], A-Prominenten [genitive], A-Prominente [plural], die A-Prominenten [definite, plural], A-Prominente [feminine]
Etymology: It appears that the earliest use of A-Prominenter versus B-Prominenter was at the Theresienstadt Ghetto (where since 1942 the SS sent Jews to be treated comparatively mildly, including especially celebrities and decorated WWI veterans). A-Prominente were recognized as celebrities by the SS directly, whereas B-Prominente were proposed by the inmates’ council. To what (if any) degree the contemporary use of the terms continues the above terminology would have to be shown by in-depth study.
