Suffix [Dutch]

Etymology: As a suffix formed by analogy with other Dutch words ending in -atief, which are almost never actually formed using this suffix (see Usage notes) (such as demonstratief, informatief, etc.). Those words tend to either be borrowed from French (see -atif) and/or Latin (in which -ativus is a common ending which is not in fact a suffix proper), or they were formed by adding the suffix -ief in Dutch to a base word ending in -atie.
