Noun [Hittite]

Etymology: Uncertain and problematic. Has been traditionally considered a cognate of Ancient Greek αὐδή (audḗ, “voice, speech”) and Sanskrit वदति (vádati, “to say, speak”) from presumed Proto-Indo-European *h₂wodh₂- (“to speak”). Kloekhorst derives it instead from Proto-Indo-European *weth₂- (“to say”), making it a cognate of Latin vetō (“to advise not to”) and Welsh dweud (“to say”). The word shows preservation of the original PIE heteroclitic inflection with secondary hysterodynamic accentuation of an originally proterodynamic word (similar to Hittite 𒂊𒌍𒄯 (e-eš-ḫar /ēšḫar/, “blood”) and Hittite 𒁁𒋻 (pát-tar /pattar/, “wing”)). Has been traditionally considered a cognate of Ancient Greek αὐδή (audḗ, “voice, speech”) and Sanskrit वदति (vádati, “to say, speak”) from presumed Proto-Indo-European *h₂wodh₂- (“to speak”).\nKloekhorst derives it instead from Proto-Indo-European *weth₂- (“to say”), making it a cognate of Latin vetō (“to advise not to”) and Welsh dweud (“to say”).\nThe word shows preservation of the original PIE heteroclitic inflection with secondary hysterodynamic accentuation of an originally proterodynamic word (similar to Hittite 𒂊𒌍𒄯 (e-eš-ḫar /ēšḫar/, “blood”) and Hittite 𒁁𒋻 (pát-tar /pattar/, “wing”)).",
