Character [Chinese]

IPA: /ʈ͡ʂä⁵⁵/ [Mandarin, Sinological-IPA], /ʈ͡ʂʰä³⁵/ [Mandarin, Sinological-IPA], /ʈ͡ʂä⁵⁵/, /ʈ͡ʂʰä³⁵/ Chinese transliterations: zhā [Mandarin, Pinyin], chá [Mandarin, Pinyin], zha¹ [Mandarin, Pinyin], cha² [Mandarin, Pinyin], ㄓㄚ [Mandarin, bopomofo], ㄔㄚˊ [Mandarin, bopomofo], zhā [Hanyu-Pinyin, Mandarin], jha [Mandarin, Tongyong-Pinyin], cha¹ [Mandarin, Wade-Giles], jā [Mandarin, Yale], ja [Gwoyeu-Romatsyh, Mandarin], чжа [Mandarin, Palladius], čža [Mandarin, Palladius], chá [Hanyu-Pinyin, Mandarin], chá [Mandarin, Tongyong-Pinyin], chʻa² [Mandarin, Wade-Giles], chá [Mandarin, Yale], char [Gwoyeu-Romatsyh, Mandarin], ча [Mandarin, Palladius], ča [Mandarin, Palladius]
Etymology: Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) : semantic 犭 (“dog”) + phonetic 查. Coined by Lu Xun in his short story, “My Old Home”. According to him, the sound component, 查 (zhā) was similar to how the countryfolks said the animal's name. Whilst most modern sources identify the animal as a badger or a badger-like animal, (Yu, 2016) proposes that the animal might actually have been a water deer - the word ultimately coming from 獐 ([*tsɒ̃~tsɒŋ]) in some variety of non-urban Shaoxing Wu (likely what would have been spoken by the real-life inspiration for the character 閏土/闰土 (Rùntǔ), who tells young Lu Xun about the animal). This would have later been corrupted to [*tsɑ] in Lu Xun's own Urban Shaoxing Wu, and eventually likened to Standard Mandarin 查 (zhā).
