Etymology: From 盆 (bon, “tray; Obon festival, Bon festival”), with an epenthetic vowel -i added, in turn from Middle Chinese 盆 (MC bwon). This word is also recorded in some western Kansai and eastern Chūgoku dialects up to at least the Shōwa period; some dialects have the forms ぼおに (bōni) and the Yoshino dialect of Nara Prefecture has ぼんに (bonni). First attested in the Kagerō Nikki of 974.
