Noun [Japanese]

IPA: [a̠sa̠bo̞ɾa̠ke̞] Forms: asaborake [romanization], あさぼらけ [hiragana, historical]
Etymology: Compound of 朝 (asa, “morning”) + ぼらけ (borake, of uncertain meaning). Speculating on the nature of the second element borake, there is a distant possibility that this might be from 洞開け (hora ake, literally “cave + opening”), in reference to the myth of the sun goddess Amaterasu shutting herself into a cave, and the reopening of that cave representing a dawn of sorts. See also Amaterasu#The_Heavenly_Rock_Cave.
