Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /ár.kys/, /ˈar.cys/, /ˈar.cis/, /ár.kys/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ˈar.kys/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ˈar.cys/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ˈar.cys/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ˈar.cis/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Unknown. Accoridng to Lidén, related to ἄρκευθος (árkeuthos), ἀρκάνη (arkánē) and Russian раки́та (rakíta, “willow”) but Beekes finds this improbable, as a derivative suffix would be expected. According to him, it is more probable a Pre-Greek word, giving the technical nature of the term.
