Noun [Thai]

IPA: /miŋ˥˩/ [standard] Forms: mîng [romanization]
Etymology: From Middle Chinese 命 (MC mjaengH, “life, fate, destiny”). Cognate with Lao ມິ່ງ (ming, “fate, destiny, auspicious thing”), Shan မိင်ႈ (mīng, “fate, destiny”), Ahom 𑜉𑜢𑜂𑜫 (miṅ, “fate, destiny”), Sui mingh (“fate”). Attested since 1400–1419 in Wat Hin Tang inscription. Sathiankoset surmised that this word used to mean "life" but was displaced by ชีวิต (chii-wít) and then by สิริ (sì-rì).
