Proper name [Persian]

IPA: [mɑː.zan.da.ˈɾɑːn] [Classical-Persian], [mɑː.zän̪.d̪ä.ɾɑ́ːn] [Dari, formal], [mɑː.zän̪.d̪ä.ɾɑ́ːn] [Dari, formal], [mɑː.zän̪.d̪ä.ɾɑ́ːn] [Kabuli], [mɔː.zän̪.d̪ä.ɾɔ́ːn] (note: Hazaragi), [mɒː.zæn̪.d̪æ.ɹɒ́ːn] [Iran, formal], [mɔ.zän̪.d̪ä.ɾɔ́n] [Tajik, formal] Audio: Mazandaran.ogg [Iran] Forms: mâzandarân [romanization]
Etymology: Literally, “the gate or the valley of the giants” from مازن (mâzan) + در (dar) + ـان (ân), from Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬌𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬀 (mazaⁱniia, “giant”). The name has been used in Shahnameh to refer to a land inhabited by divs (daevas) and sorcerers and is difficult to conquer. On the other hand, after Muslim invasion of Persia, the region of Tabaristan remained unconquered for a relatively long period of time, which was later called (and mistaken for) Mazandaran.
