Noun [Old Armenian]

Forms: bacin [romanization]
Etymology: The origin is unknown. The meaning is uncertain. Found in Mandakuni in a list of foods allowed during նաւակատիք (nawakatikʻ) and possibly referring to a kind of fish or dairy product. Also found in medieval dictionaries as an equivalent of ատիարդիոն (atiardion) and սապարթիոն (sapartʻion). According to Norayr, the first of these is corrupted, whereas the second is the Ancient Greek σαπέρδιον (sapérdion), σαπέρδης (sapérdēs, “name of a fish brought from the Black Sea and salted”); based on this he explains բածին (bacin) as "a kind of salted fish".
