Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /pý.liŋks/, /ˈpy.liŋks/, /ˈpi.liŋks/, /pý.liŋks/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ˈpy.liŋks/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ˈpy.liŋks/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ˈpy.liŋks/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ˈpi.liŋks/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Clearly related to πυλεών (puleṓn, “wreath”); on this basis, a pre-form *πύλος (*púlos) has been assumed. This *πύλος (*púlos) is then connected with Sanskrit पुलक (pulaka, “erection or bristling of the hairs of the body”), पुलस्ति (pulasti, “wearing the hair straight”) and पुल (pula, “horripilation”). From Iranian, Kurdish is adduced, and from Celtic Irish ulcha (“beard”). However, Mayrhofer doubts this connections; in fact the suffix -ιγγ- may rather point to a Pre-Greek origin.
