Adjective [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /ma.ke.dnós/, /ma.ceˈðnos/, /ma.ceˈðnos/, /ma.ke.dnós/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ma.keˈdnos/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ma.ceˈðnos/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ma.ceˈðnos/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ma.ceˈðnos/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Uncertain. Traditionally explained as either formed from a nominal construction parallel to μακρός (makrós), μῆκος (mêkos) + suffix -δόν- (-dón-) which is typical for appellations, animal names and nomina actionis and may be zero vocalism of -δόνος (-dónos), -δών- (-dṓn-). It can also be perceived as an arrangement of μηκεδανός (mēkedanós, “long”), in its turn derivation of μῆκος (mêkos). Hesychius records μακεδνή (fem) as 'long, tall'. Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek non-Indo-European origin, however, de Decker and Nikolaev both reject the argument. "etymology_text": "Uncertain.\nTraditionally explained as either formed from a nominal construction parallel to μακρός (makrós), μῆκος (mêkos) + suffix -δόν- (-dón-) which is typical for appellations, animal names and nomina actionis and may be zero vocalism of -δόνος (-dónos), -δών- (-dṓn-). It can also be perceived as an arrangement of μηκεδανός (mēkedanós, “long”), in its turn derivation of μῆκος (mêkos). Hesychius records μακεδνή (fem) as 'long, tall'.\nBeekes suggests a Pre-Greek non-Indo-European origin, however, de Decker and Nikolaev both reject the argument.",
