Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /tʰým.braː/, /ˈθym.bra/, /ˈθim.bra/, /tʰým.braː/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ˈtʰym.bra/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ˈθym.bra/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ˈθym.bra/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ˈθim.bra/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Hardly derived from θύμον (thúmon, “thyme”), in which case the "-β-" could be epenthetic between "μ" and "ρ". Persson proposed a derivation from τύφω (túphō, “to smoke”) in "-ρ-", with nasalization and deaspiration; this is most improbable, unless the word is Pre-Greek. Niedermann recalls Anatolian Θύμβριον (Thúmbrion) and on the other hand Τυμφρηστός (Tumphrēstós). Probably a Pre-Greek word, in view of the metathesized form.
