Noun [Romanian]

Etymology: Probably from Latin termen, an older alternative form of terminus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ter- (“through”). The archaic variant form țărmur(e) may have been the original, from which the modern form developed analogically, re-interpreted as a singular from the plural țărmuri. To explain this original archaic form, various Vulgar Latin intermediate roots have been proposed, including *termonem, as the accusative of the variant popular form termō, or *terminem as an alternative accusative form, or a diminutive *termulus. Compare the borrowed doublet termen.
